TITLE: THE COMMISSION OF CHRIST (Life of Christ series #48)
Scripture Reading: Mark 16:15; Matt 28:18-20

I. The Conception.
Was that an afterthought? Out of disappointment?
The last temptation in the wilderness. Matt. 4:8-9
The Sermon on the Mount. “Inherit the earth.” Matt. 5:5
“The meek shall inherit the land.” Psalm 37:11, 22, 29.
“The salt of the earth; the light of the world.” Matt. 5:13-14
His overwhelming boldness. Matt. 24:35
His naturalness and confidence. Matt. 26:12-13
His originality. Gal. 3:28

II. The Accomplishment.
Great ideas may not be fulfilled.
Sometimes impracticable; Plato’s Republic
Sometimes crushed under reality; French Revolution—liberty, equality, and fraternity.
Slowly the gospel was spread from nation to nation and from land to land.
The realization of His commission and vision is one of the strongest of all arguments for the divinity of Jesus Christ.
Under great difficulties the worldwide mission has been carried out.

III. The Obligation.
We owe to this great command.
We need to make this commission our own.
By prayer, by interest, by thoughtful giving, we can help the worldwide mission work.

Title: Jesus and the Blind Man Bartimaeus
Scriptures: Mark 10:46-52

Would you rather be blind or deaf?
Blindness has always evoked a degree of pity.
This blind man of Jericho did not even have a name.
He was begging at the gate of Jericho. He asked and knew that Jesus was passing by.

I. The Cry For Mercy
At least I will ask Him.
He knew that Jesus was the Messiah of Jews.
Other people ordered him to be silent.
The more they rebuked him, the more he cried out.

II. The Kindness of Christ
Son of God Jesus stood still.
Bartimaeus was very surprised. The first time in his life that anyone had wanted him.
He sprang up and ran to Jesus.
“What do you want me to do for you?”
Bartimaeus asked for the greatest thing of all.

III. The Greatest of All Sights
He saw the face of Jesus.

IV. The Power of the Will
If Christ were present now, what would you ask Him?
Will you ask him for the greatest thing that is eternal life?
That first chance of Bartimaeus was also his last.
Today, now, he will stop for you. Jesus of Nazareth is passing by.

Download

Russell Glazier。

John and Betty Stam。

Title: What Then Will There Be For Us? (Life of Christ series #28)
Scriptures: Matthew 19:23-30

Rev. Russell Glazier。

He was a graduate of Moody Bible Institute in 1925.

A book about Moody graduates,”A Martyr’s Grace”

Twenty-one Moody graduates were martyred in the mission fields.

John and Betty Stam graduated in 1932.

They were assigned to Anhui Province in 1934.

What can be the meaning of this verse on the martyrdom of John and Betty Stam?

Peter speaks up with his question.

”We have left everything to follow you! What then will there be for us?”

In the great answer which he gave him, Jesus spoke, first of all, to the twelve disciples; and then to every faithful and self-denying follower of Christ in every age.

Christ declared that all things are to be restored to the original plan.

This great promise divides itself into two parts.

First, what the believer in Jesus is to have in this world.

Secondly, what he is to have in the world to come.

1 Timothy 4:8.

I. Reward Now in This World

First, godliness brings light; lights up the path of life from day to day. Proverbs 4:18.

Second, a reward of good influence. Acts 5.

Third, a reward of a good conscience.

II. Reward in the World to Come.

Christ speaks of the world to come, which cannot be seen, but eternal.

Not only in this life, for Christians there are promise and benefits in the world to come.

Nineteenth century English poet of romanticism Byron (1788-1824).
1 Corinthians 15:19.

The disciple of Jesus has a living hope. 1 Peter 1:3,4.

John 11:35. “Jesus wept.”

Philippians 1:23.

In the world to come, the greatest of joys will be the joy of the presence of the Savior.

(Divine Comedy)

Title: The Rich Young Ruler (Life of Christ series #27)
Scriptures: Matthew 19:16-22

Dante’s Divine Comedy: The Inferno Hell
The rich young ruler, “he went away sorrowful.”
The threefold account in the Gospels is not contradictory, but supplements the other.

I. The Attractiveness of the Young Ruler

Mark says that Jesus, looking upon him, loved him.

a. Enthusiasm
Some people are “enemies of enthusiasm.”
19th century missionary to Africa, David Livingstone.
This young man was enthusiastic about his soul and its welfare.

b. Courage
Nicodemus came to see Jesus by night.
But this rich young ruler ran out to see Jesus openly.
He was willing to receive the acorn of Pharisees.

c. Ambitions
This young man showed a deep interest in the highest things.
Os Guinness in his book, “The Call”
The students in Oxford are inspires by the spires of gothic building. Oxford, “the city of the dreaming spires,” had bred a dreaming son.
Guinness uses Oxford to encourage Christians to have a sense of mission.

d. Unspotted from the World
The young man had kept all the commandments.
He had no conception of the high spiritual interpretations of the Commandments as Christ interprets them in his Sermon on the Mount.
This young man is worthy of our praise and admiration.

e. Desires Eternal Life
He hungered and thirsted for things spiritual.

II. The Searching Test

Jesus loved him and put him to the supreme test.
Christ upheld the right of personal property.
Christ did not make giving up all property as a necessary condition of discipleship.
Jesus warned against covetousness, not against personal property.
This rich young ruler due to his riches could not follow Jesus and become his disciple.

III. The Sadness of His Failure

He went away sorrowful.
Because of deep disappointment.
This young man did not go away in a rage.
I wonder what his subsequent history was.
It was his great moment when Christ spoke to him that he was not far from the Kingdom of God.

Many years later, he said with a sigh, “Then, if I had followed Christ, I might have had Eternal Life—but now!”
No disciple of Christ ever ceased to follow him and felt happy over it.
Do any of us see ourselves in the situation of this lovable young man?
If you are hesitating, if you have a secret yearning for Christ, and you feel something is holding you back.

TITLE: What is a Christian Marriage? (Life of Christ series #26)
Scripture Reading: Mark 10:1-12

Sociologist Pitirim Sorokin in 1964 predicted.
Marriage is in trouble.
Divorce statistics.
British psychotherapist David Cooper wrote “The Death of the Family” in 1971.
Many Americans are experimenting with alternate life-styles.
Psychiatrist Thomas P. Malone in 1988 predicted a greater acceptance of trial marriages in “Art of Intimacy.”
University of Chicago Professor Linda Waite in 2000 wote “The Case for Marriage.”

Any Biblical guidelines for Christian marriage?

A. Marriage is a Permanent Relationship. Mark 10:6-7
Your marriage is a sacred union.
God planned for man and woman to be together.

B. Marriage is a Harmonious Partnership. Mark 10:8
      Mutually sacrificial. Ephesians 5:23
Role of the husband, Ephesians 5:25
Role of the wife, Ephesians 5:22
Marriage is a giving relationship, a life of service.
Selfishness is the cause for conflict.
Not superiority and inferiority, but complementary functions.

C.Marriage is a Spiritual Companionship.
Each helps the other to grow in Christ.
One flesh, not only a physical union, but of a spiritual union.
Lord Jesus Christ is a partner in a Christian marriage.
Christ is the center. Matt. 18:20
Time of fellowship, prayer, and study together in God’s Word.

A Christian marriage demands Christian living.
It demands a commitment—a serious commitment—to the Lord and to His will.
Families that pray together stay together.

Title: The Importunate Widow (Life of Christ #25)

Scriptures: Luke 18:1-8

I. Our Lord’s Design in This Parable
We ought to be always in the spirit of prayer.
Our whole life should be a life of devotion to God.
We should persevere in prayer.
We should be more frequent in prayer.

II. Two Actors.
The judge was devoid of all good characters.
This judge consciously cared for nothing but his own case.
This judge was practically unkind and cruel to her.
The widow was apparently a perfect stranger to the judge.
She appeared at the judgment seat without a friend.
She came without a promise to encourage her.
She was without the right of constant access.
She provoked the judge every time she prayed.
The case of this widow the judge could not be himself personally interested.
She was only one.

III. The Power That Triumphed
Not because she was eloquent.
Not because she had the merit.
Because she prayed continually.

In an afternoon of a Sabbath, he uttered the terms of discipleship.

One must put His claims above the highest and best things of earthly relationship.
One must prepared to take up his own cross and follow Him.

Why did Jesus require such high standard?

I. Lord Jesus has to count the cost.

Charles Spurgeon published the magazine, The Sword and Trowel. The idea was taken from Nehemiah.

Seeker-driven church; Emergent church.

Gideon was the judge to lead God’s army into war. It was an example of the quality of His disciples more important than the quantity of them.

II. What am I worth to Him?

Recently there was a ceremony of naturalization taking place at Arlington National Cemetery.

What is our cross?

When our suffering is peculiar to ourselves, we have not touched the realm of the cross.

Sunday, February 23, 2014
Download

Sermon Title: The Two Debtors (Life of Christ series #8)
Scriptures: Luke 7:41-43

Lord Jesus taught by example happening at the moment.
A woman of bad reputation came to the banquet of a Pharisee to see Jesus.
She wants to tell Jesus how much she loves and appreciates him.
Jesus knows Simon and the woman.

I. The Common Debt
They are both debtors, though one owes but a tenth of what the other does.
The difference, which does exist, is a difference of degree.
God can see our inner motives.
“We all sinned and come short of the glory of God.”

II. The Common Insolvency
We have nothing to pay.
None of us can in any degree diminish our sin considered as a debt to God.
We need to recognize our penniless insolvency.
God does not accept partial payment and let you off the debt.

III. The Love Which Varies with the Forgiveness
The man that is most forgiven is the man that will love most, if all other things are equal.
A man’s consciousness of the benefit received should be considered too.
In the church history, many great sinners became the great saints.
So let no outcast man or woman listening now to me despair.
Let no man think lightly of sin, though it can be forgiven.
Our individual spiritual desire and growth depends on our consciousness of our sin and appreciation of God’s forgiveness.
Why so many Christians are not growing and desiring in God?
God be merciful to us. Show to us that Jesus saved us from a horrible pit.
Our real debt to God is ten thousand talents.
Let us love Jesus as much as He has loved us.

Sermon Title: John the Baptist—The Friend of the Bridegroom (Life of Christ series #7)
Scripture: Matthew 11:2-11

To stand upon the shoulders of one of God’s great men we can see afar.
This event happened during the second year ministry of Lord Jesus.
John the Baptist sent his disciples to ask Jesus.
“Among those born of women there has not risen anyone greater than John the Baptist.”

I. The Origin of His Greatness

In the human history, God sent great men into the world.
God prepared a man, and there is a man sent from God.
John’s parents were both righteous before God.
After his training in that home of piety and self-denial, John was trained in the desert.

II. The Content of His Greatness

1. The greatness of his conviction
With terrible earnestness he told the world what he did believe.
That deep conviction made John sincere and earnest in his preaching.

2. The greatness of his humility
“He must become greater; I must become less.”
John never turned his own immense popularity to a selfish purpose.

3. The greatness of his courage
Underneath John’s humility was a solid rock.
Even to Pharisees and the Sadducees, John preached to them to have fruits of repentance.
He marched into King Herod’s palace and denounced his sins.

4. The greatness of his message
“But all things that John spoke of this man were true.”
“Look, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world!”
In this world, people speak to one another, “You are OK, I am OK. We are not sinners.”
This message confesses that Jesus is the Son of God.
This message accepts salvation provided through Jesus’ death on the cross.

Sunday, February 9, 2014
Download

Sermon Title: The Two Builders (Life of Christ series #6)
Scriptures: Matthew 7:24-27.

This parable marks the close of the Sermon on the Mount.
We must not only hear; we must obey.

I. All Who Hear Are Builders
There are the wise builders, and there are the foolish.
The most important thing is our foundation.
The word of Jesus, the whole Bible, is the foundation of our building.
If we do not build according to the Bible, then we build by the evil of men and the wisdom of this world.

II. The Building Are Going to Be Tested
The buildings we are making, sooner or later, are going to be tested.
We must build with a view to hours of crises, to times of tempest.
The buildings we are constructing are our inner heart, character, and life.
Sometimes the storm breaks upon us in the guise of a great temptation.
The storm may come in the guise of some bitter personal loss.
There may come to you the complete loss of health.
The storm may bring in larger abundance. Quails in the wilderness.
Finally, to every one of us is coming the test of the final judgment.

III. The Results of the Testing Are Not the Same for All
Some are not going to be able to stand the test.
But there are those who are going to pass through the testing without loss.
Christian witness, built on the word of Jesus, will not fall.
The word of Jesus is also good foundation to build society and culture.
The Christian society loves children, respects human rights, and develops democracy and science.
The Christian culture encourages honesty, trust, and truth.
We have a cloud of witnesses; let us be wise builders.

Scripture: Matthew 6:9-13

In the Sermon on the Mount Jesus teaches us how to pray.
We need to pray for two aspects; the class of petitions that refer to God’s glory comes first. Matthew 6:33.

I. Petitions That Relates to God’s Glory

The first petition: God’s name represents Himself.
In today’s society people do not hallow God’s name.
Fifty years ago, following Friedrich Nietzsche, theologians said “God is dead.”

The second petition: Messiah will come to establish His kingdom. Mark 1:14-15.
His first coming was the beginning of His kingdom; but it has not come yet.

The third petition. Often we ourselves do not consent to God’s will.
Jesus said to Father, “Nevertheless not my will, but yours, be done.”

II. Petitions That Relate to Ourselves

The fourth petition. We may ask for our daily bread. 1 Timothy 4:3-5.
Many people don’t believe in the usefulness of prayers. They are not different from atheists and materialists.
In addition to prayers, we have our responsibilities—to work together with God.
We need to help others about their daily need. James 2:15-17; 1 John 3:17-18.

The fifth petition. Debts are men’s sins. Matthew 6:14-15. Luke 11:4.
Often we ask for things, but forget to ask for forgiveness.
The necessary condition of our being forgiven by God is to forgive others.
Forgiveness is only given to penitent ones. Luke 17:3.
God forgives only the penitent, but loves everyone. Matt. 5:43-45.
To receive forgiveness, one must confess one’s sins and repent.
We are sinners saved by grace, so let us love others like God does.

The sixth petition. I am weak, O Lord, bring me not into temptation.
